The intricate beadwork are an interpretation of fish scales, or "charpa", in the kichwa language. Not only is it a major source of food for many communities, but an inspiration point for contemporary indigenous aesthetics.
This product was made in Saraguro, Ecuador, by kichwa women who wear traditional necklaces in similar shape, but make new contemporary designs that can be worn by all regardless of background and history.
