The Yana Qata (Black Coat) is a reinterpretation of the earlier Hatun Qata (Great Coat). This garment tells the narrative of Ishkay Ñan (Two Paths), as it carries the stories of both Northern and Southern Hemispheres, weaving together multiple cosmologies and geographies; the convergence of Indigenous peoples.
Yana Qata (black coat) speaks not only to Spider Woman and Inti (the Sun), but also tells the tale of the Yanas, which are carriers of knowledge and a reflection of our future ancestors. Through this piece, memory, time, and transmission are held in balance.
Inspired by the utility of the traditional Andean poncho, this garment reimagines versatility through contemporary design.
Designed by Yana Manta (Kinoo Arcentales Cajas) and woven in collaboration with Kichwa families in Imbabura, Ecuador, the textile itself is an expression of Indigenous sovereignty and slow fashion. From fabric to finishing, it is 100% Indigenous owned and operated, a living example of Indigenous Futurism and the thriving presence of Andean creativity.
This coat can proudly be worn by all.
Materials: Cotton-acrylic blend fabric
Handmade with care; each piece carries slight variations in pattern for a unique result.
